It snows in Hawaii on the highest peaks. So snow in the tropics is not unheard of. (Mostly, this was just me playing 'what if...') I try to stay away from time travel/dimensional rift theories--that way lies madness
More about assumptions about the Penny scene.
We assume the events on the island are causing the anomoly that the guys are detecting. But this event could be happening in the past or the future, they could be detecting something else altogether.
We assume that because we saw Penny, she is real and in the world. But wouldn't Desmond, thinking he was going to die, imagine the most wonderful thing possible--that Penny had found him and was coming to rescue him? Maybe his wanting it so desperately (and a big ole EM explosion) made it so. Maybe with a thought, he created a new outside world.
Good afternoon Joopers !
Captain, thank you for explaining to me about how they could possibly be on the same Island ! I gotcha now ! I never even consider the fact that the Island could actually have high peaks with snow. Duh, I feel silly ! ~ But no, I really can't wrap my head around the whole time travel/rift theories, way too complicated for me. I thought if that was what you were thinking though, I would still like to hear your thoughts. Thanks again ! ~ seek

Hi Captain, I've never seen this film, but it sounds great and I've added it to my queue. I'll have it by next weekend. Thanks for the suggestion.
Be sure to watch the extra features on the dvd too. I find the idea of a reincarnated Tibetan saint who is also a film director to be fantastic

speaking of good books
has everyone finished The Watchmen?
no spoilers
just that i finished reading it late at night and thought the end was crazy
had to reread the last chapter in broad daylight
and have some thoughts about it
artwork was brilliant
the writing was fantastic
the multi-layered stories were amazing
it was truly a great read - thanks joopers!

Hi all! Wow, I missed some good discussion this weekend. I'm about 1/3 of the way through Watchmen - I'll try to speed it up. Fil also lent me The Prisoner, so I'm trying to watch those too.
Re: the two guys in LTDA: didn't we hear that they were supposed to be out on some kind of rig? They could be out at sea, on top of a big drilling installation or something. I'm very intrigued by that comment by TPTB - what could be a twist we haven't thought of?

Hi Sweet, I'm still on chapter 8. Looks like I need to take a day off work to finish it. Real-life keeps interfering with my reading time. Plus, I can't stop myself from pondering every frame. I stare at each drawing like I'm hypnotized or something. I've never seen anything like it.

Hi Lucky, I remember something about a rig, but I'm not sure if it was confirmed or just a rumor. Does anyone else remember it?
Also, can you take a look at these screencaps? In almost every shot of the two guys playing chess there's a framed picture of a woman in between them, and I can't tell if it's supposed to be "generic blonde girlfriend back home" or if it's someone we know. Penny? Juliet? Claire?

zen and bg--Knowing your love of Asian cinema, I've been meaning to ask you if you've seen the movie 'Travellers and Magicians'. I watched it last week and am still thinking about it. The movie is lovely, but even more interesting is its writer/director--
Travellers and Magicians (Dzongkha: chang hup thengi thruel nang) is a 2003 Bhutanese Dzongkha language film written and directed by Khyentse Norbu, a reincarnate lama of Tibetan Buddhism, who is also known as Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche. The movie is the first feature film shot entirely in the kingdom of Bhutan. The majority of the cast are not professional actors; Dendup, a well-known Bhutanese radio actor and producer, is the exception. The movie breaks ground as the first to take a Himalayan Buddhist perspective, offering a unique insight into this culture from the inside.
Hi!
No I haven't seen this film. Reading your description, and then reviews of this film made me want to purchase it! I always love stories within stories! Also, the reincarnate lama sounds very intriguing. Thanks for the suggestion!

Lucky: Hi guys. Bg, I looked at all of those and I just can't tell. I think it's the ghost nanny.
LOL with the ghost nanny. Speaking of ghost nanny, has anyone seen Sneaker lately? I'm on the fence about the picture's significance. Could be something. Or could be nothing.
Lucky: I'm going to try and finish by the weekend, but I can't make any promises. Like Bg, I keep getting distracted by the graphics.
I hope to be finished by this weekend as well, if not sooner. Speaking of graphics, this is my first graphic novel and I am stunned and amazed by how the characters' images seem frozen in place even while the characters' thoughts seems to move. Unlike a regular novel in which everything is fluid in a reader's imagination, and unlike a motion picture in which the characters move about even while we don't necessarily have access to their thoughts, the ability of a graphic novel to present perfectly still images while the action and the character's thoughts move is unnerving and provocative all at the same time.
It's a brand new way to experience story, at least to me.

Drat, I'll be late for work, but I just had this tinfoil idea in the shower.
Regarding the catastrophically screwed comment and the two guys at ice station zebra and the Penny phone call, etc.
Does anyone remember the weird ocean level stuff in season one? About two weeks after the crash, the tides kept rising and eventually the fuselage section was swept away and the Losties had to move their camp up the beach.
So what if that weird tide thingy was a result of Desmond's failure to push the button that time? he was outside chasing Inman and almost didn't make it back and according to him he caused the plane to crash.
Flash forward a few months. Desmond turns the failsafe key and the purple sky thingy happens. The two ice station monitor guys phone Penny because they detected the electromagnetic anomoly this time.
So what if this time, just like last time, the tides are gonna rise in about two weeks? But unlike last time when Desmond eventually pushed the button, the tides are really really gonna rise? That would make the Losties catastrophically screwed, IMHO.
Sorry I didn't have time to write this out more coherently, but I think this plausibly explains a catastrophic screwing that isn't immediately apparent. Just like in season one, there's about a two week delay. Why a delay? I don't know. Maybe a big chunk of Antarctica breaks off and melts or something. I'm dashing out the door.

This is for Lucky
Hi, I admire all your work and your theories. I hope you can get back on your feet quickly after the loss of your hard drive.
I was wondering if you remember seeing something in the smoke as it retreats out of the hole it wanted to take Locke into. I saw a screen cap on another forum that had 2 or three visible heads in it. The person describing the screen cap said they were kids.
The other question refers to the Whisperers. Are you familiar with the Whispers thread on the Fuselage? I think you might be. There are some transcripts that suggest that there might be dead people involved, like Boone. How would you include that in your theory about kids and remote viewing?

I'm not saying the rising tide won't be incorporated into the story, but the real reason the tide rose was because they had to explain why the fuselage disappeared. That set couldn't remain on the beach permanently.
About constellations--I was looking through an old atlas last night and found star charts for northern, southern hemispheres and the equatorial region. The constellation Draco cannot be seen from anywhere but the northern hemisphere. So if that screen cap is not a mistake, the island is much further north than we have been lead to believe.

Hi Captain, LOL, a lot of things happen on LOST for very pragmatic reasons such as the removal of the fuselage section you described. I won't be surprised if nothing is ever made of the weird tides and weird weather comments from season I. The weather comments occurred, IMHO, because of torrential downpours that occurred during filming.
But if they do want to take it someplace, they could work it in as I mentioned above, or in any number of other ways - it's very advantageous to the writers to have ten-zillion loose ends/red herrings.
But oh dear, I'm sorry to hear about Draco. I read somewhere (if my memory is working right) that the North Star aka Polaris could be seen from any place on earth and I assumed that Draco could be as well, being so close to the North Star. Maybe my memory is wrong or maybe it's just the North Star that can be seen.

Hi Lightcan, that's one of my favorite LOST vids. It aired during last year's Superbowl and we fans went crazy. I still do. I just love it.
And I love Robert Palmer. I was very saddened by his passing.
Also, I appreciate your asking, but I don't reveal personal information such as age, gender, location, etc. Like Alvar Hanso, I'm driven by a need for privacy. Actually, I write for a living, but I'd be laughed out of my profession if anyone saw my crazy fan fiction and some of my other LOST shenanigans, for example the Farts on a Plane vids.

Nope, no North Star from the Southern Hemisphere. According to this NASA site (about 5 paragraphs from the bottom)--
Inhabitants of the Southern Hemisphere can't see Polaris, even if they just live one degree south of the Equator,
http://www.gsfc.nasa.gov/scienceques2001/20020322.htm
This site, however, says that Draco can be visible seasonally in the Southern Hemisphere
http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/astronomy/stars/constellations.shtml
So, through the miraculous power of the internet, we have proven once again that we can indeed know everything, yet understand nothing.

LOL, Captain!
TPTB have confirmed in one of their press releases that the island is in the South Pacific, and if the constellation can appear in the sky as it did in the beach shot from season I, then dammit it can appear in the South Pacific. Who are we gonna believe? Those silly folks at NASA? Or the astronomy experts who write the show and do CGI?

LOL! Me too! I'd better get myself a really big box, one big enough to hold that load of - ahem - that rigorously scientific info about the "geographically unique magnetism building up and having to be released every 108 minutes."
All this to say, if the writers play fast and loose with scientific fact and the laws of physics, we can too.
