Just checked, they've only got 2 toes--must be some other magic turtles...

Captain, I had this crazy tinfoil idea today about what the island is. What if it's a tomb? An ancient burial place? I keep thinking about that scene in Watchmen in which Adrian describes how Ramses and the pharoahs, upon their death and in order to keep their secrets safe, buried their servants alive by filling up their tombs with sand. Maybe the ancients thought the island was a good place for burial because of its magnetic properties or its rejuvenating properties or something.
The smoke monster could have originated as a security system for the buried ancients. Ben and perhaps some of the Others could be descendents of some ancient tomb keepers, perhaps.
Wow, I've used up a lot of tinfoil lately. I'd better save some for the premiere.

I'm liking this one! I've always thought that maybe the Others were on the island in order to protect something from the world. Guarding the underground tomb of something ancient is a very cool possibility.

Captain, I keep thinking that "Underworld," the heiroglyphics, and "Cerebrus" should add up to something, and an ancient burial place sort of does the math. But maybe not. Time will tell.

Hi Lucky, does this mean Jacob aka the Pilot had the list all along, before he died? No - wait - you say he's still alive?! How did he come back to life? I know he didn't get a proper burial, but he looked pretty dead up in that tree. Oh dear me!

Your point about what the Other doctors were after is a good one. They could have been harvesting Claire's pregnancy hormones. Moreover, if any of the above tinfoil speculating about Ben being pregnant is true, then the Other doctors may have not been planning to take Aaron, as we originally assumed, but something very different. In fact, Aaron and Claire may have been beside the point. The doctors may have been after only Claire's (Aaron's) placenta and the placental connection tube thingy in order to implant it in Ben.
I recall we speculated quite a bit about why Alex was so convinced Claire would die from a simple C-Section. "You're going to die. They're going to cut him out of you." Would harvesting a placenta be more life-threatening than a C-Section? Or maybe they just didn't care if Claire and Aaron lived or not.
This is getting more bizarre by the minute.

LOL, Hi Captain. We had a streaker last night. I think that's a Joop Castle first, unless you count the time Joop ran down the hall in his bathrobe.
But back to the flight time discrepancy. Here's a couple more thoughts on the sorry mess.
1. Quite possibly the writers/production team just blew it. In their enthusiasm to work the numbers into every little thing they created an unresolvable mess. If this is true they should just come clean with a quick "Oops! Sorry fans!" and then we can all move on. They've made goofs before - Jin's ID card I think - and both the show and we fans survived.
2. That TPTB are not forthcoming with an "Oops! Sorry fans!" on this makes me inclined to take it seriously as a legit plot element. Maybe there is a way to account for the time mess we haven't thought of.

More on the flight time discrepancy. I downloaded a Sun Clock map maker and then set it to show those areas of the world in daylight if it were 10:00 pm in Sydney, Australia. (The plane left at approx 2:00 pm and I'm assuming for the sake of having something to work with it was in the air approx 8 hours, thus, 10:00 pm Sydney time.)
Forgetting the 4:16 island time thing for the moment, if the plane were in flight anywhere near 6-8 hours, THE ENTIRE PACIFIC, INCLUDING ALL OF NORTH AMERICA AND HALF OF SOUTH AMERICA WOULD HAVE BEEN IN TOTAL DARKNESS.
The only part of the Pacific that would have been in daylight would have been the very southernmost part, near Anarctica.
What was in daylight, however, was the entire Indian Ocean, Western Asia, Europe, Africa, and the South Atlantic Ocean. About half of the Northern Atlantic was in daylight.
wtf?
Here's the website if anyone wants to download one of the free map making thingys.

Maybe the thing GN says that nobody mentioned is that they would have been scheduled to land in Los Angeles well before 4:26 on the same day the left. Here's some Quantas flights from Sydney to LAX which is a 13hr 25 min flight:
Dep (Sydney time) Arrival (PST) Flight #
10:00 07:00 QF175
11:35 06:00 QF149
12:05 06:30 QF107
15:20 09:45 QF11
If they left at 15:20 which is later than they actually left they could have landed in LA at 9:45. Because they cross the dateline going east they arrive the same day they left.

I am inclined to think it was a mistake that was so glaring (what with AL's speech about the 2 hour potty break) they felt they had to make it work somehow. GN's saying it is something that no one has thought of yet I find very difficult to believe.
We've thought of everything, Gregbaby!
I don't think the time snafu can be explained scientifically. Magic turtles, parthenogenic mice, worm holes and smoke monsters are to blame! There! The truth at last!

Hi Captain, we may not have thought of everything, but it sure feels that way. This is starting to hurt my brain.
Okay, again forgetting about the 4:16 island time thing for the moment, I've been playing with the Sun Clock program I downloaded to find our how many hours the plane would have needed to be "in the air" in order to crash somewhere in the Pacific during daylight.
If the plane took off at approx 2:00 pm Sydney time, it would have had to be "in the air" for a minimum of 14-15 hours to be able to crash in the South Pacific in daylight. More likely, it was "in the air" for longer than that because 14-15 hours puts it crashing very close to Australia at daybreak.
Argggghhhh!
Captain, I think you're right. A magic turtle did it!

Well here's a small comfort from GN, who is answering some more questions even as I speak. He reconfirms that once someone is dead on the island they stay dead.
CrazyLatin: We have seen countless times evidence that Jack's father is dead, yet because his body is missing, people keep coming up with wacky theories as to which character is going to turn out to be Christian Shephard, and it's driving me crazy!!!
First, his body wasn't on the plane but the airline tricked Jack into thinking that he was, then Christian is Alvar Hanso; wait, no, he's HIM (the one Benry talks about while imprisioned in the hatch). No, no, no, no, Christian is the doctor Pickett is talking about in 306, when the alarm sounds and he asks "Did the doctor get out again?". But wait, maybe Christian is Jacob, the one who made the list w/o Jack's name on it..... One of these days someone is going to say Christian Shephard is the Polar Bear
So, once and for all, would you kindly but firmly confirm Christian Shephard is dead? (I'm begging on my knees here)
GN: Damon has said when people die on this show, they are dead. (Of course until the zombie season that is. Ha ha.) Boone, Shannon, Ana Lucia and Libby haven't come back, so I would think it's safe to say Christian is dead. Perhaps his body flew into the ocean and the shark ate it.

No, I was saying that the 4:26 time on the same day they left for the crash is so far off they could have gone on to LA, waited for lost luggage, rented a car, driven thru LA traffic and visited Disneyland by 4:26 since they would have arrived that morning at 9. And that's not counting that the flight was cut short from 13.5 hours to 8 when it crashed.

Here we go again. Please read the entire question - it includes the original Damon quote from long ago.
Alicia: ....So, for us theorists out there, can you say once and for all, whether the show is truely "firmly ensconced in the world of science fact" as Damon said it is?
GN: I think Damon's response still holds up. It may not be the science of right now, but it's definitely within the limits of theoretical science. For me, good science fiction seems to be fiction based in science fact.
Have you ever read the Red Mars series? It's a great example of fiction set in hard science. A lot of the events that happen in the book we couldn't do yet but the possibility is there. Maybe just decades away. And of course look at 2001. A really fascinating story on a philosophical level and a good story based on scientific fact. Space ships have never looked so realistic, and it holds up nearly 30 years later (if the heavy breathing section doesn't put you to sleep first).
http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=67240
Okay. I get it. It's anything the writers think may become science fact at some unknown point in the future. Yep. Got it. Pretty much anything in their wild and crazy imagination.
