See you guys this weekend, I hope. My husband and I have a night alone (no kids) - any movie suggestions? Fil said Pan's Labarynth was fantastc - maybe I'll see that? Unless someone has other ideas?
I hear it is one of the best movies out right now. Also one of the most violent. Just thought I'd warn you in case you think it is just a 'fantasy' movie.

I was doing some digging and it turns out a documentary has been made about the director, Dzongsar Khyentse Norbu Rinpoche, called 'Words of my Perfect Teacher.'
This is becoming as intriguing and complicated as LOST.
http://www.smh.com.au/news/film-reviews/words-of-my-perfect-teacher/2005/10/04/1128391225646.html
also (scroll down)
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2006/12/22/DDGKEN39IA1.DTL&type=movies
That would be fun to see, even though the film critics agree it is a bit boring. Norbu is an amazing man. The short features included on 'Travellers and Magicians' tell a little bit about him, enough to make me want to see him in person. I have been privileged to have seen 2 Tibetan Rinpoche's in person in this lifetime--truly wonderful experiences.

Hi Zen, I'm so jealous that you find time to read! I'm still on chapter 10 of Watchmen and each time I sit down to finish the book something happens.
For example, yesterday morning I discovered that my curious and mischevious doggie ate a bar of bath soap - well, more like a sliver of bath soap. But nevertheless it put me in a panic and off we went to the vets.
The good doggie doctor said no cause for alarm - just watch for mild stomach upset. To make a long story short, doggie is fine but I've got a (more than) mild stomach upset from being so worried and upset.
On another note, I was very disappointed last night to discover that 'The Magic Flute' wasn't airing on my local pbs station as listed. I sat through an entire episode of 'Antiques Roadshow' thinking that perhaps the station was just running behind or something. It was actually a pretty interesting episode - from Philadelphia - but certainly no Queen of the Night anywhere in sight.
Then, Roadshow ended and I became excited. Surely 'Flute' would be on next. But alas, no 'Flute' but a Ballroom Dancing competition instead, and still no Queen of the Night, although I must say some of the sparkly costumes were quite amusing.
What a day. From doggie soap gobbling in the morning to Flute-less flying tango steps in the evening. These are the days of my life...

Good morning!
BG, sorry to hear about the misadventure of your doggie. Hope you are both doing better. Pets do crazy things. I remember when my brother's dog ate a commercial sized salmon fish hook. She was just a pup, and he ended up helping the vet with the surgery. Maggie was fine, but my brother was pretty shaken. It is interesting to see what tickles animals' curiosity bones (if we as owners can live through it).
The Tibetan Book of the Dead program did not air on the History Channel yesterday morning. Instead, according to my friend, a program on Heaven aired, (and was taped). I'll be interested in viewing it, as I've always thought we create our own heaven on earth.
BG: What a day. From doggie soap gobbling in the morning to Flute-less flying tango steps in the evening. These are the days of my life... Sounds like a soap ( ) opera (less)! Relax and enjoy your day!

Hi Zen, being the parent of an adventurous doggie can certainly have it's wild moments. Your poor brother must have almost died during the salmon fish hook episode.
And LOL, yesterday was indeed a (soap) opera at my house. Who needs 'The Magic Flute' when you've got soap-bubble doggie toots?

Hi all! Almost done with Watchmen - I'm going to try to finish tonight. Captain, I didn't read your warning post about Pan's Labyrinth until after I saw the movie last night, but you were right - it was quite brutal. Still, a beautiful and intriguing film. You really walk out not quite able to decide whether the fantasy world (the Underworld) was actually real or just fantasy in the little girl's mind. And there's nothing like a screaming mandrake root as its killed to add that creepy je ne sais quoi. Hardly anything is as creepy as a mandrake root and its lore (and I'm not talking about the ones Professer Sprout used in Harry Potter, but the ones that used to grow in the ground below the gallows, sprung from the uh, unmentionable bodily fluid that would be,uh,discharged at the time of death. There isn't much that's creepier, except perhaps a homunculus.
Bg, great call on the VW bus! LOL, if we ever need a car for a short road trip or something, we could Joopify one of those in a jiffy!

Hi Lucky, LOL, I love the new verb, Joopify. If we can Joopify a Flying Castle and a hot air balloon, I'm sure we could Joopify a VW van.
Oh dear, I don't think I'd better see 'Pan' for a while. I'm still not over the Mandrake Root thing from last summer's Lost Experience.

Anybody seen Captain today?
Captain, if you're around, I finished "Travellers and Magicians" and I'm totally in love with this movie and with this director. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this recommendation. Netflix isn't getting this one back any time soon.
One of the things that so impressed me, beyond the storytelling itself, was the cast. How Khyentse Norbu obtained such marvelous performances from non-actors is another accolade to add to his impressive list of marvels.
I found this link is most informative. Born in 1961, Norbu didn't see his first film until he was 19, as a young monk on his way to college!
http://www.travellersandmagicians.com/TandM_PRESS_KIT_US.pdf
BTW, I loved the story framed in a story. The way each story informed the other and held it in tension was a delight. It was impossible to tell which was the magician and which the traveller.

Thanks for the well-wishes for doggie. What a mischevous doggie I have. She is blessed with curiosity, that's for sure.

Hi Zen, hi Captain, magical is just the right word for Travellers and Magicians. I just loved it. And not wanting to stop there, I ordered "The Cup." Couldn't find it on Netflix, so I bought the dvd. It should arrive from Hong Kong in a week or so. I still can't find the documentary we were discussing, however. But I'm sure it will turn up eventually.

Damon: "Sayid is asking all the questions that [fans] want answered."
God, I love Sayid. His character has always been the voice of reason and sense and he's one of the few people on the island whose judgement I trust. When Sayid said the transmission had been reiterating for 16.5 years, I believed him. When he said Henry Gale was an Other, I believed him.
In many ways, his is the most self-aware and dare I say enlightened of all the characters. Even on those rare occasions when he's pushed nearly to madness by events, such as Shannon's senseless death, he's unflinchingly honest with himself. What courage he possesses.

i totally agree that in addition to being beautiful, sayid is such a great character - while the other LOSTIES are reacting, he is thinking
he knew the hatch was trouble
he knew that Fenry was an other
he knew that Michael would betray them
i'm VERY glad to hear there will be a sayid centric epi!
