Hi all - fly by. Still no Watchmen, but if it doesn't come tomorrow, Fil will probably be finished and I can borrow hers. I feel so left out. One interesting thing from that Lost Panel thing that's spoilery:Lindelof: "We know why the people on this particular plane were brought to the island", and, regarding the Others: ". . . and why they were brought to this island."So it seems clear that the Losties were deliberately brought to the island for a reason, as were the Others. I'm so glad to know that for sure!end spoiler

Hi Lucky, LOL, I hope your Watchmen comes soon. Each page has something that undoubtedly influenced LOST - it's amazing. Spoilery talk from the Lost panel:LOL, I heard the same quote and I was wondering if Damon was speaking of the writing process itself, or if he was speaking of the island occupants being literally brought to the island. His choice of words would seem to indicate that the occupants were indeed "brought" to the island in a literal sense. But if this is true, then the question becomes what brought them there? Fate? Destiny? I'm still not willing to join the conspiracy theoristas. Done

"They seem to be much fainter than anyone suspected galaxies could be before," said study team member Daniel Zucker of Cambridge University. "So rather than dwarf galaxies, we should perhaps call them 'hobbit galaxies.'"I love how he says this as though it is the most logical thing in the world. 'Well, of course, we should call them hobbit galaxies...'

Of course! Makes you wonder how many times they watched LOTR growing up.

Yes! I love this idea! I love opera, and the idea of a bad fanfic opera is making me sweaty and giddy.
Opera Alert! I noticed in my pbs guide that on the 24th, Great Performances will air Mozart's The Magic Flute. The production was designed by the person who did Disney's theatre production of The Lion King, so it should be incredible. Mark your calendar!

Hi Bg , I know - I am getting very grouchy having to skip over everyone's fabulous-looking posts. I'm going to throw a fit and get my money back if it doesn't come tomorrow. Maybe demand some extra money for pain and suffering. I am really resentful that I'm missing the fun and togetherness of reading along with all of you.And LOL,spoilerism:Re: interpreting that Lost Panel quote, thank God you're around with your level head to balance the mind-blowingly ridiculous conspiracies I've been cooking up as this hiatus drags on. One is dumber than the next, and more and more people are in on it - I had a half-baked Norad conspiracy pop into my empty head in the middle of making chili tonight. end spoilerizing

Hi Lucky, E-mail them immediately demanding your money back and ask for additional compensation for your loss of fun and togetherness - you could maybe include a link to the Joop thread as evidence of your loss. spoilery talkLucky, I took another listen to that quote (it's about 5 minutes in) and in context it's hard to tell what the heck Damon is getting at other than "we know what we're doing and where this is going." Damon's responding about the most common question he gets asked: "Do you know where you're going?" and he's talking about the genesis of the ideas for the "crazy island show" and describing the conversations of the creative team early on:"...over the course of the first season the conversation evolved, and parts of it are still evolving, but the reality is we know what the island is, what the nature of the island is, and why the people on this particular plane were brought to this island. We know who the Others are and where they came from and how long they've been there and why they were brought to this island..."Taken at face value, his statement seems to indicate the Losties and the Others were brought there. But again the question is by what or whom? Fate? Destiny? The island, itself? Widmore or Hanso? Most likely, IMHO, no one single reason will explain why they were brought there. The groups could have been brought there at different times, and perhaps for different reasons. Or maybe not. Maybe there's some grand design at work. I think it's been deliberately written to fall 50-50. One of the most interesting phrases he uttered, IMHO, is "...we know what the island is, what the nature of the island is..."I'm trying to transfer that phrasing to some commonly known islands. "We know what Long Island is... We know what the nature of Jekyl Island is... We know what Oahu is...Sounds weird, doesn't it?But what about "We know what Alcatraz is..." (a penal island) or "We know what Atlantis is..." (a mythical island).

Good morning, Joopers! Happy Wednesday!Looky looky what I found. A nice ( brief) article about the place islands occupy in our cultural archives, our collective imagination. But wait! It mentions Rousseau and a Celtic god named Brendon!http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1310/is_1997_Dec/ai_20173036Islands occupy a special place in our mythologies, often as the scene of mysterious or extraordinary occurrences. Being cut off from the rest of the world, they are depicted as sanctuaries where human contact can be fled and danger escaped, or as places of reclusion where atonement may be sought. Clustered together, they offer many a bay and inlet where boats can land. They may be the abodes of monsters. Upon their shores temples may be erected for the performance of bloody sacrifices; there, pirates may alight, bearing stolen treasures. Or they may be the last gateway to paradise.

Hi Captain, hi Zen, hi Old Politico, I've never read Enders but I just took a quick peek at the Wiki and I see it won several awards for best sci fi novel, 1985-86. About the same time as Watchmen, I think. Zen, you'll have to keep us posted. I'm off to read more Watchmen.

spoilerzone:Bg, good thinking regarding the "The island is..." fill-in-the-blank technique. From the beginning, they've referred to the fact that they knoww what the island "is" - implying that it's not just an island, or that it's an island used for something very specific. I go back and forth between thinking that it refers to the island's composition ("the island is an enormous meteorite, and as such, is magnetic/metallic/anomalous in composition") or its purpose ("the island is a large, underground CIA secret base to train and utilize children for remote viewing/development of newfangled smoke weapon"). Re: fate vs. conspiracy, I do think they were referring to a concrete (conspiracy) reason for bringing people to the island, if anything just because of the repeated use of the word "bring," the references to "carriers," "Porter" -- I could go on. But I do think that the Others and the Losties may have been brought for entirely different reasons. Non sequitur: I keep coming back to the "raised by another"/bronze cuckoo theme, and now I'm wondering if maybe a handful of the core Losties were either born on the island or genetically tinkered with and placed in various families (maybe families connected to the military who volunteered to raise them). In other words, none of them were raised by their real parents, whoever they are.end spoilerzone
