Lucky: From the beginning, they've referred to the fact that they knoww what the island "is" - implying that it's not just an island, or that it's an island used for something very specific. I go back and forth between thinking that it refers to the island's composition ("the island is an enormous meteorite, and as such, is magnetic/metallic/anomalous in composition") or its purpose ("the island is a large, underground CIA secret base to train and utilize children for remote viewing/development of newfangled smoke weapon"). Well said, Lucky, those are my thoughts too only you said it so much more clearly. I think the island is something very specific, and again like you I can't decide if it's something natural, like a giant magnet perhaps, or if it's specificity has to do with its purpose, a utopian colony or penal colony, for example. Or perhaps something specific that incorporates both metaphysical and purposeful like Zen's Bardo Plane. Or something that's neither strictly natural nor has much of a purpose like a wrecked space ship for example. Whatever it is, I think that phrase "what the island is" indicates it's more than a chunk of land in the middle of the ocean. Something natural, something with a purpose, or perhaps something mythical, even.

Lucky: Re: fate vs. conspiracy, I do think they were referring to a concrete (conspiracy) reason for bringing people to the island, if anything just because of the repeated use of the word "bring," the references to "carriers," "Porter" -- I could go on. But I do think that the Others and the Losties may have been brought for entirely different reasons. Non sequitur: I keep coming back to the "raised by another"/bronze cuckoo theme, and now I'm wondering if maybe a handful of the core Losties were either born on the island or genetically tinkered with and placed in various families (maybe families connected to the military who volunteered to raise them). In other words, none of them were raised by their real parents, whoever they are.Hi Lucky, thanks for the reminder about the Bronze Cukoo idea. That was a really good theory. With all the daddy issues in the show, and with all the comments about the daddy issues by TPTB, and with the fertility doctor, and with the Others obsession with babies and pregnant women, I wouldn't be surprised if something very strange is going on. They could all be test tube babies conceived on the island.

Good morning, Joopers! Happy Wednesday!Looky looky what I found. A nice ( brief) article about the place islands occupy in our cultural archives, our collective imagination. But wait! It mentions Rousseau and a Celtic god named Brendon!http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1310/is_1997_Dec/ai_20173036Islands occupy a special place in our mythologies, often as the scene of mysterious or extraordinary occurrences. Being cut off from the rest of the world, they are depicted as sanctuaries where human contact can be fled and danger escaped, or as places of reclusion where atonement may be sought. Clustered together, they offer many a bay and inlet where boats can land. They may be the abodes of monsters. Upon their shores temples may be erected for the performance of bloody sacrifices; there, pirates may alight, bearing stolen treasures. Or they may be the last gateway to paradise.
Good morning Joopers! From BG's link:"The mainland is the place of ordinary life; islands are where extraordinary things happen. They are the theatre of fabulous dreams, far removed from reality. Then again, where the mainland is represented in secular terms, islands embody the sacred, being the site of temples where sacrifices are performed - with good or evil intent. And in contradistinction with our world of the living, islands often symbolize the inaccessible realm of the dead."From Wikipedia:"The Isle of the Dead is associated with pre-Christian Celtic mythology and occurs as a theme in a number of European countries. In Britain is it thought to be either a translation of the Welsh word "Annwn" for the underworld or an extant geographical feature of Britain. The author Bernard Cornwell, in his books The Warlord Chronicles of the 1990s, associates the Isle of Portland in Dorset with the Isle of the Dead. In the book he describes how the island was a place of internal exile and damnation. The causeway that almost links the island to the mainland was guarded to keep the "dead" - who included the criminally insane - from crossing the Fleet and escaping back into Britain. However, this is literary conjecture and not archaeological fact."Not In Portland? Hmmmm......

The word "Bardo" comes from the Tibetan words "bar" meaning "in between"; "do" meaning "island" or "marking point."

Joopers! Joopers! Joopers! Thank goodness the world is still out here. My presentations are over, my children are all finally well, and the house thrice sanitized. No one is allowed to sneeze, cough, or share utensils. I'm considering putting a bubble around the house as February 7th draws near! How are you all? How I've missed you. Clearly, I have a ton of reading to do to even come close to knowing what's going on. So glad you're all still here!!!!!!! Polaris, wow! And I thought the view from our floating island was spectacular!

twolfe! Welcome back! I was just thinking about you - I'm so glad you joined us again. As you can see, even though the hiatus has slowed us down some, we're staying busy and productive. We're in the middle of another book club, writing bad fan fic rock operas, spoilerizing, theorizing, and keeping our jiffy pop heads exercised and limber for February 7. BTW, I'm also trying to archive all of our old bad fan fiction on a separate website. The link is in the second Joop post if you get caught up with the Joop threads and have extra time. Oh! I should mention that my little youtubers have had 40,000 views. I almost fainted when I checked the stats today. I don't know who the heck is watching, but apparently somebody is.

Since I haven't made a complete fool of myself in, oh, at least a day, here's my flags as posted in Daddio's thread. *Danielle and Alex will not be reunited this season - even though I'm dying for the two to find each other.*Jack will appear noble as he sacrifices himself so K/S can escape, but he has a more selfish motive for staying behind. He really wants to leave the island(s) and that's why he told Kate never to return for him. He expects (hopes) to be gone. *Patchy will be more slippery than Danielle. He will appear now and then, but his true character and motives will not be revealed this season. *Paulo and Nicki are goners - sooner is better than later.*If they get any screen-time this season, Rose and Bernard will not have a very happy anniversary.*Claire will fall for Desmond. Charlie will do something stupidly heroic to get her attention (and try to win her affection) and he'll perhaps be seriously injured, but he won't die - yet. *Some big disaster thingy will happen off island that will have an impact on the island. Earthquake, tsunami, atomic bomb somewhere. I dunno. Something like that.*Cindy's just an air-hostess - at least she used to be. But since her kidnapping she's been drinking the Other Kool-aid.

Hi guys. twolfe!!! We've missed you! Yay, you're back.Bad news: my beloved computer is on the blink, may need a new hard drive. I spent much of the afternoon at the Genius Bar at Apple flirting with the cool geniuses in hopes that this might lead one of them to whip out a screwdriver and fix it right then and there. No such luck. It may be just a few days, though - let's hope. Meanwhile, I'm using the kids' computer, which is almost not worth using, unless it's to play Pajama Sam. On the bright side, this little forced break will give me more time to catch up on Watchmen, which I'm loving.Anyway, that's the deal, so pray for me.

OMG! Lucky...what...wait...OMG!Bg's head explodesFAINTINGIT'S BRENNON'S ARM AND THAT DAM PESKY KEY! OMG! Danielle's coming back. Hurley's going to find a car!"If anyone can hear me, they're all dead. It's outside. And Brennon took the keys."Brennon took the car keys! BG falls down weeping tears of joy and gratitude, babbling and moaning, while huge stacks of tinfoil burst into flames all around. Smoke alarms wail. Joop and doggie rush in. BG waves them back. Tinfoil begins curling and blackening, breaking into tiny bits and floating into the frozen night sky like particles of black smoke...sentient black smoke...away from Draco, heading south, away from the arctic pole, heading south, looking for a roadhouse parking lot...Courtesy space brought to you by the tireless Joop Castle maintenance staff who put out the fire before the Joop Castle balloon shot into distant orbit around Jupiter, and who cleaned up the resultant mess without harming the pristine natural beauty of the Arctic nor delaying the chef's preperations of breakfast.
